Foraging for food

When you’re on vacation, sometimes you have to channel your hunter-gatherer ancestors to find nourishment.

This morning, that meant roaming around the Munich airport looking for breakfast items, specifically pastries. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) I didn’t know the setup, and I didn’t see many options before security in the closest terminal. However, since I hadn’t remembered the indoors route we took to the hotel, I actually walked outside and happened to see a REWE grocery store (it’s a big chain in Germany). I headed over there, making my way past the Christmas/Winter market that is being set up. (There was a sign that used both names for the market.) This photo is from the second floor looking down. You can see the trees around the edge, and the roofs of the stalls that are being set up

These markets are a big deal in Germany, and to a certain extent northern Italy. Bolzano is famous in Italy for its Christmas market, and people come from all over Italy to go to it. I mean tour buses, not just individuals. Living there, you have a different perspective, of course, mostly avoiding it, or maybe going for specific things or events. The first year we were there, I remember going to hear S perform with her fabulous group at the time, SAM Session. It was snowing lightly, and it was a wonderful atmosphere.

OK, real foragers wouldn’t get distracted by side stories, they’d focus on the mission at hand, which in fact is what did. The reminiscence came later.

On to REWE. I actually did OK in REWE. Since it’s in the airport complex, they have a lot of ready to go things. (I don’t understand all the rest of the grocery store stuff, since who’s going to the airport to do their grocery shopping?) I got what we call a yogurt parfait (hint, hint, T), a couple filled croissants, and bottled water.

Breakfast

There were two fun items. One was cute sets of plastic cutlery in their own cases. They are on the far left in that photo.

The other fun thing was LavAzza! As you may remember, LavAzza was my entry to espresso. These weren’t barista-made espresso; rather premade cold coffee drinks, specifically a cappuccino and a latte macchiato. Definitely a fun find.

The exit from REWE was on a different side from the entrance, by the other terminal, and right as I stepped out, there was a bakery stand! It was too bad I’d already gotten the REWE croissants, but I didn’t let that stop me, master forager that I am. I went ahead and got a Nüsseschnecke (=nut snail, for its shape).

Things were tasty enough, especially the Nüsseschnecke, so I think my hunter-gatherer ancestors would approve.
