No, we’re not moving! Maybe someday, but not yet.
Yesterday we met our friends SMAM for the second time this trip, and as always we had a wonderful time. Because of various circumstances, they came to Verona both times, and because parking in the historic center is impossible for non-residents, we met across the river both times.
S and M don’t really come to Verona that much, so they don’t know too many places. This has been a source of amusement over the years, since we have often suggested places to meet. Yesterday, I had help from F, who suggested one of the main streets in the neighborhood of Borgo Trento, via Quattro Novembre.
A side note on the names. Borgo Trento lies roughly in the direction of Trento (=Trent) with respect to the city center, hence the name “Trent district”. There are some other districts with similar names, like Borgo Roma (=Rome district) to the south.
Quattro Novembre (= November 4) is a national holiday celebrating the end of WW I. Since that also caused the transfer of South Tyrol to Italy, it was not really celebrated in Bolzano. There at least used to be when we lived there a contingent of people in the Bolzano area who advocated for the South Tyrol returning to Austria.
Anyway, back to Borgo Trento in Verona. When we come to Verona, we spend most of our time in the historic center. Therefore, it is what we know best, and how we think of Verona. But Verona is really much bigger than the historic center, since it has several surrounding districts. While we had walked through Borgo Trento a couple times, we didn’t really know it, so when F suggested it might be a place to meet, I went to check it out. Yesterday was All Saints Day, which meant that some usual cafes etc were closed. However, I did find a gelato place that was open and had plenty of seats, so we ended up meeting SMAM there. It was a success, so thanks to F for suggesting the area and to SMAM for coming in to Verona!
In walking over the gelato place (gelateria), it was clear that Borgo Trento is a bit more upscale in general than the historic center. We went back today following a similar route, and here are a couple pictures to give you an idea.
And to give you another idea, we went and looked at the buzzer with names for the building in the third photo, and there was one couple and the concierge. Definitely out of our league… Still, fun to see.
