Another interesting thing about traveling, even in a place you think you know, is seeing different aspects of interior design.
The interesting aspect can be simple things that might not be consistent: in the apartment in Verona, hot is up on the kitchen faucet, but down in the shower. (The bathroom sink has one handle that turns left-right for temperature and another that turns left-right for volume.)
The interesting aspect can also be design choices that make sense from one perspective but are a little odd from another. For example, the Bolzano apartment, the shower floor was very slanted to let the water drain out. I felt like I was standing on a small hill. Another choice that is just different, is that the shower was not completely closed: You simple walked in the open end and then stepped under the shower head.

The interesting aspect can be a technology that makes sense once you understand it, but which isn’t completely obvious at first glance. Again in the Bolzano apartment, there were fancy light switches. In the semidarkness when we entered, I had a hard time seeing the controls, but when I happened to move my hand closer to the panel, it light up. Cool, but not obvious.

Finally (at least for now), the interesting aspect can be a mysterious apparatus, like this one in our Verona apartment:

I had no idea what it was, until I looked up the brand on the web. Now I’m pretty sure it’s an exhaust fan and light, which makes sense since it’s over the cooktop. In my defense, even an Italian friend had to ask what it was, so I don’t feel too bad.
We have no desire to do any kind of interior design, but maybe these give our friend D some ideas?
